Gregor Hildebrandt
Gregor Hildebrandt subtly plays with the viewer's perception in works with minimalist aspects, in which he integrates autobiographical quotations, references to music, literature, cinema or art history in a complex montage. He often uses sound-related materials such as vinyls. Without any real aesthetic will, he uses objects from his everyday environment to create his works.
The artist
Gregor Hildebrandt is a contemporary German artist born on 3 April 1974 in Bad Homburg vor der Höhe, Germany. He is known for his artistic works that combine music, film and pop culture with traditional materials such as tape and vinyl records. Hildebrandt studied at the Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg from 1998 to 2006, where he was a student of Werner Büttner. He began using music as a source of inspiration for his artistic work early on. He has lived in Berlin since 1998 and has been Professor of Painting and Graphics at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich since 2015."Die Kassettenregale"
Gregor Hildebrandt's Cassette Shelves reflect the artist's insatiable interest in music and cinema. A further development of his works on paper and in conjunction with his granite works, both of which depict iconic figures from cinema, these works are inspired by the shelves commonly used to store cassettes during the golden age of analogue media. They depict paintings or portraits that were cut out and glued to the shelves of the cassettes. Robin Wright is a portrait of the American actress Robin Wright. In this new work, the artist has distorted the portrait of his muse with cuts that mimic the pattern of the crumbling wall in his backyard. By exposing some of the cassette tapes, the cut-outs provide partial access to the music archive that metaphorically sits on the shelf.
